THE DETHRONING OF DIVINE BEASTS by RUI XU

The performance is an adaption of the Classics of Mountains and Seas, an ancient Chinese compilation of early geography and myth. Rui XU’s unique costumes, animal masks and specially composed music and dance, will tell the story of seven divine beasts, whom reside in an ancient realm of myth and legend. These are White Marsh, Torch Dragon, Chimera, Chenghuang, Water Unicorn, Nine-Tailed Fox and Pale Deer of Flood. These once exalted and all powerful creatures, half god and half beast, are terrified to discover that their magical powers have become redundant after being transported to the mundane world, a modern city.

The world has already changed, the divinity of nature has become altered with each passing day by the influence of technology and the digital age. When divinity is absent, when faith is no longer there, what path should humans take?

Seven exceptional dancers from various countries around the world, together with renowned makeup artist Yasmin Heinz, sought after hair stylist Keiichiro Hirano and Rui Xu, have created this woeful but beautiful story. The performance revolves around the Dizang Studio Jade collection, which showcases outstanding Chinese mythical animal carvings crafted from the precious material of jade.

Dancers: Amy Grubb, Tuan Ly, Lauren Sheerman, Antonia Pantazatou, Elisa Vassena, Anders Duckworth, Johanna Merceron.
Choreographer: Amy Grubb

QUITE NOW / 7 WAYS TO BEGIN WITHOUT KNOWING WHERE TO START by Irina Baldini

Performing in a two-part choreography by Irina Baldini, during the Venice Dance Biennale 2018.

The evening will feature Quite Now (world premiere) and 7 Ways to Begin Without Knowing Where to Start, that was last year’s revelation in the section, Biennale College – Choreographers.

This is a choreographic zone where perception prevails over technique, and where sensations are the keynote.

SOME TIMES by Janine Harrington

Performing in a new work by Janine Harrington, as part of the Open Choreography Performance evening at Siobhan Davies Studios.

SOME TIMES marks a new phase of making: integrating materials of movement, writing and singing. The project develops ideas from past works around sociality or ways of being together, but is a move from the cognitively-driven installed works Janine Harrington has been making to a more content-driven work. SOME TIMES explores how shifts in scales can offer different possibilities of thinking about where we are in the contemporary moment.
